India, poised to become the world’s youngest nation with a working-age population of approximately 800 million, holds immense potential. However, realizing this demographic dividend requires addressing societal disparities. Nandan Nilekani and Viral Shah argue that technology-driven government reinvention is crucial to fulfilling the aspirations of all 1.2 billion Indian citizens. Rebooting India outlines twelve citizen-centric, high-tech initiatives offering cost-effective solutions to major national challenges. Drawing on their Aadhaar experience, the authors propose initiatives projected to save the government at least Rs 1,00,000 crore annually—approximately 1% of India’s GDP—a sum sufficient to fund 200 Mangalyaan missions yearly. The authors contend that this transformation requires not a massive workforce, but rather a small, highly skilled team and governmental support.
