Over five thousand years of African history unfold in this sweeping and compelling narrative. From the author, this book traces the rise and fall of ancient kingdoms and empires, the spread of Christianity and Islam, the search for resources, and the journeys of explorers and missionaries. It also examines the fate of modern African states and offers a perspective on their future. This is a grand account of the continent’s past. Africa has been coveted for its riches for millennia. In past centuries, it was the lure of gold, ivory and slaves that drew fortune-seekers and conquerors. In modern times, the focus has shifted to oil, diamonds and other valuable minerals. Land was also a prize. The Romans relied on north African colonies for grain shipments, and Arab invaders followed, eventually colonising the region. In modern times, foreign corporations have acquired land to secure food supplies. In this vivid panorama of history, the author follows the fortunes of Africa over a period of 5,000 years. He traces the rise and fall of ancient kingdoms and empires; the spread of Christianity and Islam; the enduring quest for riches; the exploits of explorers and missionaries; and the impact of European colonisation. He examines the fate of modern African states and concludes with a glimpse of their future. His cast of characters includes religious leaders, warlords, dictators and legendary figures, among them Mansa Musa, ruler of the medieval Mali empire, said to be the richest man the world has ever known.
