About the Author
J. Krishnamurti (1895-1986) was born in Madanapalle, a small town west of Chennai, of Brahmin parents. In 1909, at the age of fourteen, he has proclaimed savior and then taken to England by Annie Besant. There he was trained and privately groomed for the role of World Teacher. In 1929, however, he repudiated the mantle and dissolved the organization of which he was the head, declaring that he did not want disciples, unleashing a storm of controversy. A gentle and unassuming teacher, Krishnamurti traveled the world over the next half-century, giving public lectures and private interviews and inspiring figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Aldous Huxley, George Bernard Shaw, and the Dala, i Lama. The essence of his teaching is that only a complete change of mind in the individual can bring about a change in society and therefore peace in the world. He believed that this radical change could take place in each individual, not gradually but instantaneously. It helps us to see ourselves as we are because the inner revolution occurs in an absolutely clear vision.
