Medici Etranger Award Winner. Following the horn form of Indian classical music, Amitav Ghosh slowly builds the rhythm of The Circle of Reasons. The first part spans decades, the second part spans weeks, and the third part flies through the day like a scherzo. Ghosh’s debut novel centers on Alu, an orphan recruited by his adoptive father as a soldier in a crusade against the forces of myth and irrationality. They are about to be arrested on suspicion of terrorism, but a tragic accident forces Aru to flee his village. Pursued by an errant policeman, Alu manages to make his way across Kolkata to Goa, where he boards a fishing trawler transporting illegal immigrants to Africa. Tracing Alu’s journey across two continents, Circle of Reason is an extraordinary novel by one of India’s most celebrated English-language writers.
