On November 18th, the Charlie Company of the 13 Kumaon Battalion, Kumaon Regiment, bravely defended against a Chinese attack at Rezang La Pass in Ladakh, India. Led by Maj. Shaitan Singh, the company of 120 soldiers faced overwhelming odds, resulting in the martyrdom of 110 men. When the battlefield was reached on February 10th, the soldiers were discovered frozen, still clutching their weapons and bearing the wounds of battle. The extraordinary courage of Charlie Company was recognized with one Param Vir Chakra, eight Vir Chakras, four Sena Medals, and one Mentioned-in-Dispatches – making it one of the most decorated companies in Indian Army history. Their valiant stand halted the Chinese advance, securing the Chushul airport and preventing potential occupation of the Ladakh region. Reports indicate that a total of Chinese soldiers were killed attempting to capture Rezang La. The company was comprised largely of soldiers from the plains of Haryana.
