Prize Stories 1999: The O. Henry Awards presents a collection of exceptional short fiction, celebrating the intensely personal experience of reading. The editor emphasizes that while the words on the page are universal, each reader’s interpretation creates a unique journey. This subjectivity makes selecting winning stories a nuanced endeavor, as the essence of a great short story often lies in its ability to surprise and transcend preconceived notions. This volume showcases stories that defy easy categorization, offering unexpected narratives that illuminate deeper truths about human nature. From a man inspired by Richard Nixon to a study of depression leading to isolation, and even a tortoise’s perspective on Tongan history, these tales demonstrate artistic risk-taking that pays off. The collection also features stories with more conventional approaches that excel in their craft, whether through vivid settings, distinctive voices, or insightful character portrayals. Explore diverse milieus, including the rodeo circuit, ancient Hindu ruins, whitewater rafting expeditions, the Pacific nation of Fiji, and turn-of-the-century California. Discover unique voices, such as a woman grappling with miscarriages, a couple encountering strangers from a burning building, and a man reflecting on his brother’s perfection. The stories delve into the inner workings of characters, shedding light on the broader human condition. This collection includes stories featuring a group of boys preying on a classmate, a wife facing mechanical difficulties on a plane, an unlikely friendship between a privileged teen and a factory worker, a businessman recalling his youthful athleticism, and a woman’s decision to keep her baby after a traumatic experience. The top-prize winners, introduced by esteemed writers, were selected with dedication and generosity, highlighting the open and vital landscape of the short story. This collection underscores that exceptional fiction can emerge from both established and emerging voices, and from a variety of literary journals.
