The renowned American poet John Shade was murdered in 1959. This book presents his final poem, *Pale Fire*, along with a foreword, extensive commentary, and notes by his editor, Charles Kinbote. Known as the “Great Beaver,” Kinbote is portrayed as haughty, inquisitive, and intolerant, prompting questions about his sanity and even his capacity for violence. His eccentric annotations, veering into the personal, may reveal more than intended about his relationship with Shade.
