Lock-Up is a stunning debut novel by M. Chandrakumar, inspired by his own life experiences. The author spent two weeks in jail after being wrongly accused of a crime, and those days fueled this searingly honest and intense novel. Chandrakumar exposes the injustices faced by marginalized communities at the hands of the authorities, prompting readers to confront difficult questions about society. Originally published in Tamil, Lock-Up received the Best Document of Human Rights’ Award. The novel served as the basis for the film Visaranai, which won the Best Feature Film in Tamil at the 63rd National Film Awards, premiered at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, and was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. Lock-Up is a powerful and essential read, offering a revealing commentary on a world often overlooked.
