About the Author

David L. Nelson is an esteemed biochemist with a career spanning decades of teaching and research. Born in Farmont, Minnesota, he earned his BS in Chemistry and Biology from St. Olaf College (1964), followed by a PhD in Biochemistry from Stanford Medical School under Arthur Kornberg. Nelson’s research explored intermediary metabolism, ion transport in bacteria, and signal transduction in Paramecium at institutions like Harvard and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Renowned for his lectures and mentorship, Nelson taught advanced biochemistry courses, authored theses, and received awards such as the Atwood Professorship. He directed the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Biology Education from 2002.

Michael M. Cox, a distinguished biochemist, was born in Wilmington, Delaware. Inspired by Lehninger’s Biochemistry during his undergraduate studies at the University of Delaware (graduated 1974), he pursued a Ph.D. at Brandeis University under William Jencks and conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford with Robert Lehman. Cox’s work revolutionized our understanding of genetic recombination, particularly through his research on the RecA protein and DNA strand exchange. As a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1983, he has led significant research, taught undergraduates for decades, and received numerous awards. His hobbies include gardening, wine collecting, and designing laboratory spaces.
