“I, Krishnadevaraya” is the English translation of Ra. Ki. Rangarajan’s acclaimed Tamil novel, Naan Krishnadevarayan. Inspired by a suggestion to translate Robert Graves’ I, Claudius into Tamil, Ra. Ki. instead chose to craft a first-person account of Emperor Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagar empire. The narrative portrays Krishnadevaraya as a young man grappling with romantic desires that initially eclipse his other concerns. However, his minister and mentor, Appaji, guides him to prioritize his duties. Ascending to the throne amidst adversity, Krishnadevaraya undertakes a formidable struggle to safeguard the Vijayanagar empire. Circumstances force him to forgo the woman he loved and his passion for literature. Despite these challenges, Krishnadevaraya rises to become the most distinguished emperor in the history of the Vijayanagar empire. This translation offers an intimate glimpse into the emperor’s internal world, vividly depicting his thoughts, vulnerabilities, and decision-making processes. Skillfully translated by Suganthy Krishnamachari, “I, Krishnadevaraya” provides a compelling exploration of one of India’s most celebrated monarchs.
About the Author
Ra. Ki. Rangarajan, who was with Tamil magazine Kumudam for forty years, left a mark on almost every genre of Tamil literature. He even wrote on the occult. He was perhaps the author with the most pseudonyms—as many as ten! He also tried his hand at translations, capturing the flavour of Sidney Sheldon and Jeffrey Archer for the Tamil reading public. His translation of Henri Charriere’s Papillon was serialised in Kumudam and was a huge hit. Ra. Ki’s short stories with a surprise twist in the end were compiled under the title Twist Kadaigal and were inspired by Jeffrey Archer’s A Twist in the Tale. Ra. Ki.’s magnum opus was Naan Krishnadevarayan.
