In March, twenty-seven Britons were formally recognised as ‘Heroes of the Holocaust’ by the British Government for their efforts to protect Jews during the Nazi regime. The silver medal awarded, inscribed with the words ‘In the Service of Humanity’, acknowledges those ‘whose selfless actions preserved life in the face of persecution’. These recipients risked their lives to save Jewish friends, or complete strangers, and were described as ‘true British heroes and a source of national pride’ for standing against prejudice, hatred and intolerance. Some, like Frank Foley, working at the British embassy in Berlin, issued forged visas to enable around 10,000 Jews to escape Germany before World War 2. Others, including ten British POWs who sheltered and cared for Hannah Sarah Rigler during her escape from a death march, demonstrated great humanity amidst cruelty and suffering. All were ordinary people who acted on their own initiative, refusing to remain passive in the face of evil.
