This best-selling computer organization book is thoroughly updated to reflect the industry’s shift to multicore microprocessors from uniprocessors. This ARM edition emphasizes the embedded computing industry’s importance and features the ARM processor—a leading instruction set architecture for embedded devices—to explore instruction sets and computer arithmetic. A MIPS processor is used to present fundamentals of hardware technologies, pipelining, memory hierarchies, and I/O. x86 architectures are also covered. The accompanying CD includes simulators, compilers, tutorials, and advanced study materials. Features include ARMv6 (ARM11 Family) as the primary architecture for presenting instruction sets and computer arithmetic; coverage of the shift from sequential to parallel computing, with a new chapter on parallelism and parallel hardware/software topics in every chapter; a new appendix on modern GPUs; a novel approach to measuring multicore performance; new content on flash memory and virtual machines; nearly 200 pages of new exercises; the AMD Opteron X4 and Intel Nehalem as real-world examples; and updated processor performance examples using the SPEC CPU2006 suite.

About the Author

David A. Patterson earned his PhD from UCLA in 1976, joined UC Berkeley in 1977, and contributed to the development of RISC technology, RAID, and cluster technology. He also worked on the CM-5 supercomputer and the Network of Workstations project. He has authored over 200 papers and 5 books, and received numerous awards including election to the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. He received the Outstanding Alumnus Award (UCLA Computer Science Department) and the Distinguished Teaching Award (Berkeley), as well as several ACM and IEEE awards. John L. Hennessy, president of Stanford University since 1977, is a faculty member in electrical engineering and computer science. He is a fellow of the IEEE and the ACM, and a member of several prestigious academies. He received the 2001 Eckert-Mauchly Award and the 2001 Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award, and shared the John von Neumann Award in 2000. After completing the Stanford MIPS project, he co-founded MIPS Computer Systems, which developed a commercial RISC microprocessor. His more recent research focuses on multiprocessors, including the DASH multiprocessor architecture. He considers revising his books a form of recreation.
