Set against the backdrop of the Balkan wars of the 1990s, particularly the siege of Sarajevo, A Winter in Stockholm explores themes of family—fathers, lovers, mothers, and sisters—and the impact of masculinity. Narrated by a pregnant woman traveling alone, the story follows her journey to uncover the life of a poet marked by a past trauma. As she navigates a challenging winter, she experiences both a lost love and the promise of a new one. This intellectually stimulating and poetic novel contemplates the complexities of identity and the interconnectedness of lives, questioning what it means to be European and how experiences outside of Europe shape the European self.
About the Author
Agneta Pleijel is a celebrated Swedish author whose work seamlessly blends dramatic storytelling with insightful character studies. Beginning her career as a playwright in 1969, she has since authored eight novels, three volumes of poetry, and numerous works for theatre and film. Her novels often explore themes of family and identity, notably through Observer of the Wind (1987), which draws upon her own family history in Indonesia, and the acclaimed family trilogy The Surgeon of the Queen, The King’s Comedian, and Sister and Brother (2006-2009). Pleijel’s extensive travels across Europe, Africa, and Asia, particularly her connection to Indonesia, deeply inform her writing, as seen in Lord Nevermore (2000), a compelling portrayal of Polish intellectuals between the World Wars. A Winter in Stockholm (1997) remains one of her most widely translated and beloved novels. Joan Tate was a highly respected translator who played a pivotal role in introducing Scandinavian literature to English-speaking audiences. After a formative period spent in Sweden during World War II, where she learned the language, Tate dedicated her career to translating the works of leading Scandinavian authors, including Astrid Lindgren, Ingmar Bergman, and, notably, Agneta Pleijel. Her work was instrumental in fostering a greater appreciation for modern Scandinavian prose.
