At twenty, Sriram receives his savings passbook from his grandmother. This marks his coming of age, but his life takes another turn when he encounters an enchanting and unpredictable girl who introduces him to Mahatma Gandhi’s entourage. R K Narayan’s novel follows Sriram’s journey, detailing the triumphs and tragedies of a young zealot serving Gandhi. This story is characterized by warmth, humor, a lack of sentimentality, and a sense of absolute truth. Sriram’s evolution into manhood is a strange and bewildering process, influenced by Bharati, a witty, infuriating, capable girl who is condescending to him. Her primary loyalty is to Gandhi, a saint with disconcerting common sense, whose tragedy lies in surpassing his followers. Many enthusiastically accept his ideas, yet unwittingly distort them. Sriram, inspired by Gandhi, is also easily swayed by glamorous patriots like Jagadish, a terrorist. This novel offers remarkable insight into the rise of Indian nationalism through the experiences of Sriram and Bharati, told with the genius and compassion expected of R K Narayan.
