Friedman argues that the dawn of the twenty-first century will be defined not by political or military events, but by a new era of globalization that has “flattened” the world. The rapid expansion of advanced technology has connected knowledge pools and resources globally, leveling the playing field and transforming everyone into potential equals and competitors. As the rules of this new landscape shift, the author questions whether the world has become too small and flat, too quickly, for us to adapt to the “death of distance” that now requires constant acceleration just to keep pace. In this essential update on globalization, Friedman demystifies the complex, evolving global scene. This edition includes new chapters that explore the benefits and drawbacks of the latest developments in communication. The author examines how tools like blogging, podcasting, and video-sharing platforms allow individuals to reach a global audience, and how increased internet access provides marginalized communities with the means to address social injustice. Conversely, the book identifies the “Age of Interruption,” noting how technology intended to improve global communication can degrade local interactions. Through a discussion on the perils of constant connectivity—from mobile devices in meetings to the distractions of personal electronics while driving—Friedman challenges us to consider how we can maintain focus in an age of perpetual interruption.
